All through life we have to take a look at our progress, to evaluate how well we’re doing. At school we have tests and exams to see how much we’ve learned; at work, we have performance reviews to see how well we’re doing at our job; at the doctor we have tests run to see how well our health is doing. If you’re a politician every 4 years you have a public evaluation called an election. So it shouldn’t be surprising that as Christians we need to take time to evaluate our spiritual life.
Lent is a time to look at our spiritual progress, to see what’s working and what isn’t. We try and honestly look at our relationship with God and how close we are to following Him. In Matthew 16, Jesus says “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themself and take up their cross and follow me.”
