Two travelers. Friends? Brothers? Husband and wife? We haven’t the slightest idea. Just Cleopas and whomever. Why did Luke not name the other person? Could he want us to put our name in there? Wouldn’t he want us to be part of the story? Cleopas and Tim or Cleopas and Lois or Juanita or Rich or John or Bonnie or Brenda they’re walking down the road on the way home to Emmaus. They really were just like us. Same concerns; they haven’t changed much from then to now. Keeping food on the table, keeping out of trouble, keeping up with the neighbours, keeping a stiff upper lip in the face of dreams squashed and hope lost.
