Twenty-five years ago, I went on a Women’s Canoe Trip on Killarney Lake, here in Ontario. It was to be a three-day retreat with seven women. Some of us were experienced canoeists, and others (like me) were not. Okay, I had practiced twice on the pond in Tottenham. The important thing to remember here is that it was a pond – a small, quiet pond.
In Killarney, we planned to experience the dramatic, iconic wilderness landscape, stunning sapphire-blue lakes, and pink granite shores. You may have seen famous paintings by the Group of Seven. The area is characterized by hills, Jack Pine, crystal-clear water, and rugged, ancient scenery.
We were surrounded by God’s handiwork in its rawest form; we weren’t just visiting creation — we were being welcomed into it, invited to lay everything else down and simply be.
