I remember watching a special with the magician David Copperfield. He had a car from the famed Orient Express surrounded by people from the audience who joined hands. He covered the car with a giant cloth. As we watched the cloth along with the train car began to rise in the air. Then with a quick tug on the cloth, it came away revealing the car had disappeared.
We were amazed, but the thing is, we weren’t really surprised, because that’s what David Copperfield a magician does, he makes things disappear.
Now, travel back with me around 2000 years, Jesus has been crucified and hastily buried in a tomb. The women left the disciples cowering in the upper room, and they went to the tomb to properly prepare Jesus body for his burial.
One thing we know for certain, when you put a dead body in a tomb, it stays there, it doesn’t get up and walk away. Yet the women were in for a giant Easter surprise. They arrived at the tomb, the stone was rolled away, the soldiers who had been standing guard were passed out by the tomb, and when the women peered into the tomb, it was empty … Jesus wasn’t there. Instead, two angels stood in his place and shouted “SURPRISE!!” Okay that’s not what they actually said, but it had the same effect.
